Health Equity Day

Health Equity Day Agenda

On Thursday, April 30th, the Health Equity Action Team (HEAT), a working group of the Forsyth County Healthy Community Coalition will host the first annual Winston-Salem Health Equity Day at Salem College. The event will begin at 11:30 am with a showing of the award winning PBS documentary, “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat as you watch the film.

At 1:00 pm, our keynote speaker, Dr. Adewale Troutman, Director of Louisville’s Metro Public Health and Wellness, will discuss the Louisville experience which is highlighted in the Unnatural Causes documentary and describe how he and other community members formed the Louisville Center for the Elimination of Health Disparities.

Dr. Tim Monroe, Director of the Forsyth County Department of Public Health, will continue the conversation with a presentation of local health data. A panel discussion on how we, as a community, can move forward in reducing health disparities will follow. The day will conclude with a reception from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, featuring local musicians and artists.

The mission of the Health Equity Action Team (HEAT) is to engage communities in Forsyth County to reduce health inequities by promoting awareness, organizing, and advocacy to address the social and environmental determinants of health. HEAT seeks to effect change at multiple levels across individuals, institutions, and communities with the long-term objective of supporting policy changes related to social and environmental injustice and their impact on disparate health outcomes.

The event is co-sponsored by:

  • Center of Excellence for the Elimination of Health Disparities – WSSU
  • Delta Sigma Theta
  • Forsyth County Department of Public Health
  • HealthCare Access
  • The Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity – WFUSM
