TRU Youth Representatives Meet With Senator Brunstetter

Over the past several months, TRU Youth Advisory Council members have worked on becoming youth advocates, and learning to interact with elected officials. Over the holidays, personalized cards were mailed to local and state representatives from the TRU program in an effort to increase awareness about tobacco prevention and to promote local TRU efforts.

On Thursday, February 23, 2012, Kiera Wade and Darriana Christmas, juniors at Reynolds High School, received the opportunity to take their advocacy skills a step further by meeting with Senator Brunstetter at his Winston-Salem office. These young advocates shared with the Senator why tobacco prevention is important for youth in Forsyth County, what their TRU program is doing, and why TRU is important to them.

In addition to talking in person with the Senator, the TRU program created a portfolio to share with him. This portfolio included program handouts, local media releases, locally created TRU PSA’s and commercials, and information about teen tobacco prevention in North Carolina.
