Healthy Corner Store Network’s Summer Success

Think of all the places you can find fresh fruits and veggies this time of year. Roadside stands and Farmer’s markets are everywhere and in full swing. But what about local corner stores? It may not be the norm to grab an apple on the go from a convenience store, but five local stores have jumped on board the Healthy Corner Store Project and their owners are making some changes to provide healthy choices to their customers.

The Healthy Corner Store project exists to address some of the healthy food availability issues in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. Our hope is give residents easier access to healthy foods in their own communities. This way, areas that are considered food deserts have healthier options to choose from, and will ultimately have better health outcomes.

This is all done by providing the stores things like signage, shelving, advertising, and even holding events like healthy food tastings in order to better promote the new items.

Two taste testings are coming up on Wednesday July 16th. The first is at Parker’s Stop & Shop from 11am-12pm and the second is at Rebecca’s Store from 3:30pm-4:30pm.

The stores that are currently in the network are:

  • Kingz Downtown Market - 418 N Liberty St, Winston-Salem, NC
  • Parker's Stop & Shop - 4257 Reidsville Rd, Winston-Salem, NC
  • Tickled Pink Convenience - 3080 Kernersville Rd, Winston-Salem, NC
  • P&P Convenience - 2723 Farmall St, Winston Salem, NC
  • Rebecca's Store -1501 Attucks St Winston-Salem, NC 27105

The Healthy Corner Store Network is made possible thanks to the Forsyth County Department of Public Health, Wake Forest University, the CDC’s Community Transformation Grant, and the Gramercy Research Group.
