Cycling Fun Day Returns to Downtown Winston-Salem with Free Food, Music and Activities!

Cycling Fun Day is a free human-powered event where streets are closed to vehicular traffic (Poplar, 4 ½, Spruce and Holly Streets) for cyclists, skaters and walkers! This family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, August 16 from noon to 3 pm.

This year’s event is in partnership with the Winston-Salem Journal’s Solar Bear Ride to benefit Cancer Services. The Winston-Salem Journal will be providing free food to registered participants in addition to live music. There will be a special children’s activity area featuring a Bike Rodeo (bike skills) and helmet fitting. When taking a break from cycling, walking or skating you can enjoy games, activities and exhibitors along 4th Street. Cancer Services will also be sponsoring a scavenger hunt with prizes!

If possible, try to walk or bike to the event. If you need to take a vehicle, there is plenty of on-street parking close to the Cycling Fun Day course.

Cycling Fun Day sponsors include the City of Winston-Salem and the City’s Way to Go Bike and Pedestrian Program, the Forsyth County Department of Public Health, Novant Health, the Winston-Salem Journal and Cancer Services.

For advanced cyclists, there will be a 50-ish mile ride beginning promptly at 9:00 am that will end at the Cycling Fun Day course. It will depart from the Winston-Salem Journal parking lot at the corner of Spruce and 5th Street, and head west to Yadkin County. Please arrive a few minutes early to register. There is no fee, but donations to Cancer Services of Winston-Salem are welcome. For more information about this ride, please contact Scott Sexton at ssexton@wsjournal.com or (336) 727-7481.

The Community Bike Ride Group will be leading a 10-mile ride beginning at 10:30 am and ending around noon at the Cycling Fun Day course. To participate in this ride meet at Caffe Prada (corner of 4th and Broad) at 10:30 am. You can find more information about the Winston-Salem Community Bike ride at http://about.me/bikews
