On the Same Page 2015: Finale Event with Nathaniel Philbrick

Sunday, October 11 at 4 pm at the Arts Council Theater (610 Coliseum Drive in Winston-Salem)

For the finale event of our annual community read program On the Same Page, we are hosting a presentation by our featured author, Nathaniel Philbrick.

Philbrick grew up in Pittsburgh. He earned a BA in English from Brown University and an MA in American Literature from Duke University. After working as an editor at Sailing World magazine, he wrote and edited several books about sailing, including The Passionate Sailor, Second Wind, and Yaahting: A Parody.

In 1986, Philbrick moved to Nantucket with his wife Melissa and their two children, where they still live today. In 1994, he published his first book about the island's history, Away Off Shore. In 2000, he published the New York Times bestseller In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. It was adapted into a major motion picture directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, and Brendan Gleeson. It is scheduled for wide release on December 11.

Philbrick has since written a series of acclaimed books, including Mayflower (2006), The Last Stand (2010), and Bunker Hill: A City, a Siege, a Revolution (2013), which has likewise been optioned for feature film adaptation. His latest book, Valiant Ambition, will be released on May 10, 2016.
