Two delegates from Forsyth County attended 4-H State Council Conference November 19-20, 2016 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The delegation joined more than 270 youth and adults from across North Carolina. While at the conference, delegates had the chance to participate in interactive workshops, improve their leadership skills and learn with others from across the state. During the conference, attendees celebrated and recognized 4-H Youth Volunteer award winners and helped celebrate the achievements of youth reaching new 4-H Ambassador levels.
4-H’ers who attending from Forsyth County were Blaise Gourley and Brian James (BJ) Hutchins. Saturday, BJ was awarded the North Central District 4-H Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. BJ has served as President of the Forsyth County 4-H Council and Vice-President of the Trailblazer Teens 4-H Club this year. He has presented at 4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus and attended Youth Voice. BJ has spent countless hours performing community service at Kerner Ridge Assisted Living, the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, providing No’bacco education throughout the county and teaching others about citizenship. BJ is the son of Glenda and the late Brian Hutchins of Winston-Salem.
In addition, Grant Wise, was selected as a North Carolina 4-H Youth Volunteer of the Year, however, he was unable to attend the awards ceremony because he is away at college. Grant loves science and weather and shares his love with others through a weather blog, social media, the National Weather Service and WFMY News 2. Grant received the gold Presidential service award in February for conducting over 250 hrs of community service at the Kerner Ridge Assisted Living center, a home-school co-op, and at the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. Grant is attending Union University in TN fall majoring in physics and minoring in engineering. Grant is the son of Benny and Karen Wise of Westfield.
