N.C. Cooperative Extension in Forsyth County recognized many Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers at an awards ceremony luncheon for their hours and years of service.
Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers dedicated thousands of hours to educating their community in 2017. The volunteers assisted with Cooperative Extension’s programs about gardening in Forsyth County.
N.C. Cooperative Extension in Forsyth County recognized many Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers (EMGVs) at an awards ceremony luncheon for their hours and years of service. Throughout 2017, EMGVs organized three lecture series, covering a variety of gardening topics and teaching nearly 800 gardeners. In addition, the volunteers taught 450 Forsyth County third graders about plant science through a field trip to the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park.
Extension also took the opportunity to recognize EMGVs who have been a part of the program for several years and provided many hours of service to Forsyth County. The NC EMGV program recognizes milestone achievements in service, and 27 volunteers have given over 1000 hours with a few reaching over 5000. Additionally, EMGVs were honored for the many years they have put into the program. Twenty-nine volunteers have contributed more than 10 years to the EMGV program, and a few dedicated volunteers have served the program for over 20 years.
With the help of these dedicated volunteers, Extension in Forsyth County teaches gardening workshops to adults, conducts a field trip to educate third grade students about plant science in the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park, maintains two public demonstration gardens, and much more. Additionally, these volunteers seek out opportunities to increase their knowledge of horticulture and engage in the community by planning group field trips, inviting educators to speak at monthly meetings, and conducting two annual plant sale fundraisers.
Many of Extension’s programs happen through the dedicated work of its volunteers. We are so happy and honored to recognize and work with this group of talented EMGVs.
