The urban farm school is an educational program that trains interested persons living in vulnerable communities how to develop urban market gardens. Participants learn how to grow in season and how to sell at farmers markets in order to increase household income. Students commit to taking classes two days out of the week for 12 weeks. They learn about the science of agriculture, experience hands on practices in urban farming, basic urban farm business planning, and selling at farmers markets. At the completion of the Urban Farm School, students earn a certificate of completion, gain work skills in gardening, safe produce handling and marketing. The end result is that Urban Farm School students develop their own food systems where they have access to healthy foods for their families and neighborhoods.
