Changes for Waste Management customers and new recycling service coming Jan. 1

Households in unincorporated areas of Forsyth County that use Waste Management for curbside garbage collection will need to sign up with their area’s new provider, and all unincorporated households will soon have access to curbside recycling pickup.

Waste Management’s solid waste franchise with Forsyth County expires at the end of this year. The 12,000 households in the unincorporated areas the company covers will need to contact their area’s new provider, which will either be Rural Garbage Service, Inc., ABC Garbage, Inc., or North Davidson Garbage Service, Inc. Affected customers should have received postcards or flyers with information on how to sign up with their new provider. A map below shows which areas will be covered by which providers next year. Basic garbage collection and pricing will remain the same. These changes do not affect any services within any municipalities.

To continue to receive service after Jan. 1, residents that will be served by Rural Garbage Service or ABC Garbage, Inc. should contact those companies by Nov. 30. North Davidson recommends returning the form it mailed out by Dec. 1 or pre-registering online by Dec. 25.

Additionally, all 26,000 households in unincorporated areas of the county will be able to have curbside recycling collection service from their providers starting on Jan. 1. Rural Garbage Service and ABC Garbage, Inc. will charge $7 a month for the service. North Davidson’s recycling service will be $6 for those with garbage service and $9 for those who just want recycling pickup.

Minor Barnette, Forsyth County Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection director, said the new optional recycling service has numerous environmental benefits.

“By participating, they’re helping to extend the life of the landfill, conserve natural resources, conserve energy, conserve water and prevent pollution,” said Barnette.
