Tonya McDaniel to be sworn in as newest Forsyth County commissioner

Tonya McDaniel will be sworn in as the newest Forsyth County Commissioner on Monday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Forsyth County Government Center, 201 N. Chestnut Street.

McDaniel, who was elected this year, will represent District A and will take the seat currently occupied by Everette Witherspoon. McDaniel is the Human Resources director at United Health Centers and is a native of Winston-Salem.

McDaniel said she was going to work hard to ensure representation and equity for her district.

“I have always been, and will continue to be, connected to the community in my commitment and desire for progress,” said McDaniel.

She has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Public Administration from Winston-Salem State University along with a Master in Public Administration from North Carolina Central University.

McDaniel is the Second Vice Chair of the Winston-Salem Chapter of the NAACP. She’s also active with the Forsyth County Democratic Party, where she serves as a precinct chair and third vice chair of the Forsyth County Democratic Women. She’s a member of Union Baptist Church, where she chairs the Social Action Committee. She also chairs the Winston-Salem chapter of the National Association of University Women.

Also during the organizational meeting on Monday, the commissioners will elect their new chair and vice-chair. Commissioners who won re-election will also be sworn in. There will be a reception held afterwards. In a separate ceremony held at 3 p.m. at the Hall of Justice, Forsyth County’s new sheriff, Bobby Kimbrough, Jr., will be sworn in.
