“Bee” on the Lookout for Honey Bee Swarms

Swarming usually takes place in late spring or early summer, but the Forsyth County Extension Center is already receiving reports that swarming is occurring now. A honey bee swarm results when a portion of an existing hive emerges, with a queen, to start a new colony. The bees cluster on an object until a suitable home is found. Clusters are typically not dangerous and should just be left alone. The bees will likely relocate within 24-48 hours. If the swarm cluster is in a location that might pose a risk to people or animals your local county Extension center can provide references for local beekeepers that collect swarms. For more information read the N.C. Cooperative Extension article Bee Aware for Bee Swarms.
